Citizen consumer and civic Action Group (CAG), in association with Consumer Rights, Education and Awareness Trust (CREAT) and BMS College of Law, organised an energy efficiency and conservation seminar for law students, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and consumer groups from around the state at BMS College of Law, Bengaluru, Karnataka on 29th April 2024.

A University of East Anglia study shows India’s agricultural land exposure to drought would reduce by 21% if the global warming threshold of 1.5 ºC above pre-industrial temp. is met. This will further reduce economic damage due to riverine flooding & exposure to drought. 

 

CAG conducted a baseline study for the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission, funded by the Department of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Tamil Nadu, to understand climate literacy. The findings suggest that we need to intensify our efforts to familiarise students and people with the science behind climate change.

Delving into the environmental attitudes of college students in Tamil Nadu, our study reveals that students have a fondness for nature, a commitment to conservation, but show neutrality on key issues such as eco centric concern. Additionally, we convened a workshop involving academicians, researchers, environmentalists, and journalists to revisit the existing UGC environmental studies curriculum. The outcome report and model syllabus from this workshop serves as an addendum to the main report.

The need for climate action becomes urgent with every passing second we go on about business as usual. It is high time we rethink and reshape the way we produce and consume in this day and age. CAG organised a Multistakeholder Forum on Sustainable Production and Consumption in Chennai on 23 and 24 March. The discussions over the course of two days have been compiled into this report with recommendations for the way forward.

It is recommended that screening for hypertension commence at 18. Our modern lifestyles, and Indian predisposition to hypertension means that seemingly fit, young people are also carrying the burden of hypertension. Don't wait for symptoms to appear. If you're unsure about which helmet brand to choose, any brand will suffice as long as it carries the ISI mark to guarantee your child's safety. Even if a helmet manufactured abroad has a stricter criteria than is allowed by Indian regulations, if it doesn't have an ISI mark, it is not permissible for sale in India.

To decrease the number of cars on roads, enhancing public transport and promoting sustainable methods of travel (cycling and walking) must be the top priorities. Countries like Singapore use a 'carrot and stick' approach with car ownership made financially burdensome by imposing high costs for purchasing and maintaining vehicles, expensive fees for parking, taxes, and road tolls. Only a combination of these is likely to work.
